Nutritional diagnostic for apple trees, Optimum ranges, DRIS

Abstract

A two year field study (1987 and 1988) was conducted to compare the nutritional status, diagnosed by optimal ranges (Bould, 1970; Robinson, 1986), DRIS, field response of application of NPK, and correlation analysis between growth in- dex, tree production and foliar concentration of nutrients. Sixteen year old trees of the Golden Delicious variety grafted on the MM111 rootstock planted in a 5 x 4 m distribution, were used as experimental material.

When metodologies were compared it was found that the optimal range and DRIS diagnostic indicated K and Mg deficiencies; DRIS and the optimum ranges, as interpreted by Bould (1970), agreed in the four most deficient elements (K, Mg, B and N); however, DRIS did not detect P and Zn deficiences which were defi- cient in the most of the samples acording to both interpretation criteria of the op- timal ranges. Statistically significant correlations were found between growth index and foliar concentration of N, Mg, Zn and B.

In conclusion, in the determination of nutritional deficiences in apple trees, the diagnostic is affected by the metodology and the interpretation criteria used, as well as the crop load.
