Resumen

La ganancia de peso en lechones es un proceso multifactorial que determina la eficiencia productiva en la industria porcina. Este artículo analiza los factores principales que intervienen en el desarrollo de los lechones, enfatizando la importancia de una aproximación holista. La genética tiene un rol imprescindible en razas comerciales como Pietrain, Duroc, Yorkshire y Landrace, desarrolladas para mejorar las características de crecimiento. Los requerimientos nutricionales son importantes para este propósito. En este artículo se enfatiza en la importancia del calostro, la leche materna y las dietas especializadas que cubran las necesidades concretas de proteínas, energía y micronutrientes. La salud intestinal también representa un factor determinante, pues la microbiota participa de manera importante en el desarrollo del sistema inmunológico y en la eficiencia del aprovechamiento de los alimentos.

El manejo sanitario preventivo, que incluye control de enfermedades como diarreas, infecciones respiratorias y parasitosis, es básico. Las condiciones ambientales: temperatura, ventilación y humedad, además del diseño de instalaciones, tienen un impacto directo en el bienestar y crecimiento de los lechones. Los aspectos sociales y de jerarquía también son determinantes en su desarrollo desde etapas tempranas. El peso al nacimiento, el acceso a recursos como la leche materna y el manejo durante el destete, son elementos importantes que pueden determinar el rendimiento futuro. En conclusión, se destaca la necesidad de un enfoque holístico que integre genética, nutrición, sanidad, ambiente y manejo social para lograr una producción porcina eficiente y sostenible.
