In this investigation 23 genotypes of safflower were evaluated with an objective to analyse the yield components and to identify higher yielding varieties in the production of oil content under dryland conditions.
The analysis of variance indicated significant differences for yield/ha and yield/plant, capsules/plant, seeds/capsules, seed weight, plant hight, number of primary branches, days to flower and oil percentage. The yield varied from 881.1 a 2496.7 kg/ha, meanwhile the production potential of oil/ha in the varieties varied from 303.1 to 986.2 kg/ha. The four genotypes POI-5-66-5-1-, POI-6-16- 1-1-, CM-1098 and T-3 produced maximum seed yield. Maximum oil percent and higher production of total oil/ha was recorded in these two lines POI-5-66-5-1 and POI-6-16-1-1. With regards to yield components the lines T-3, T-15, POI-6- -16-1-1-. and 38VF75-53-1-1-2 manifested higher number of capsules per plant; CM-1239, CM-1276, POI-5-66-5-1 and T-15 for number of seeds/capsule; T-1, CM-1082, CM-1136 and 10VF75-2-3-5-2- for seed weight recorded higher values.
From the current investigation it is suggested that selection for three yield components: capsules/plant, seed/capsule and seed weight individually or com- bindly would increase the yield in the varieties of safflower under dryland conditions.
