Abstract

Chromium L – methionine in diets based on sorghum and soybean. for pregnant sows; 2. Birth and 3. Progeny. An experiment was carried out to evaluate the addition of Cr L–Met on the productive behavior of commercial sows (Hampshire, Duroc and Yorkshire) and their progeny. The possible benefits were observed in sows live weight, pregnancy and lactation; it was also analyzed the litter size in terms of litter weight, number of piglets or kilograms of piglets produce at birth and weaning. The serum metabolites glucose, urea, creathinine, cholesterol, total proteins, and uric acid were measured. The following minerals in blood serum were evaluated: P, Ca, Mg, Cu and Zn. Fifteen sows were fed with a diet based on sorghum and soybean meal (14.8 % CP and 3.1 Mcal ME). Cr L–Met was added at levels of 0, 300, 600 ppb. The results showed no statistical differences (P>0.05) among the analyzed groups in terms of live weight of sows, weight at puberty, and weight at the end of lactation. No differences (P>0.05) were detected among groups as far as litter size at birth, and weaning. No differences were found (P>0.05) in the levels of serum electrolytes and metabolites analyzed in those sows, given different levels of Cr L–Met. It was concluded that the addition of Cr L–Met to reproductive sows did not affect their weight gain at puberty, gestation and lactation and did not improve the number and weight of their piglets at birth, and at weaning. Also, the supplementation of Cr L–Met did not affect serum metabolites and electrolytes in the treated sows.
