The objective of this assay was to determine the importance of male goat’s sexual behavior on the stimulation of the secretion of the LH, in anovulatory female goats, exposed to male effect. Two groups of females (n=10 each one) were exposed to 2 bucks at sexual rest (SI), one awake, and another sedated to prevent his sexual behavior. Two other groups of goats (n=10 each), were exposed to 2 bucks induced to intense sexual activity through 2.5 months of long days (16 hours light/day; SA), one awake, and another sedated. The LH secretion was deter mined in two periods: 4 hours before, and 8 after the introduction of the bucks during the first day, and 4 hours the following day. The introduction of SA bucks, awake or sedated caused a stimulation (P<0.05) of the pulsatility of the LH for the first 4 hours of contact between sexes. The pulsatility of LH stayed high during 24 hours in the females with a SA awake buck, whereas in the group with SA sedated buck, the frequency of LH pulses dimin ished after the first 4 h of the stimulus (P<0.05). The SI bucks, awake or sedated, did not stimulate the secretion of LH. The female goats responded in a different manner to introduction of SA, and SI bucks (P<0.05). One LH pulse was detected during the first 15 min in 9 out of 10 females in the sedated SA group, and in 7 out of 10 in the awake SA group, while in the SI sedated group the pulse was observed in only 1 out of 10 and, in 0 out of 10 in SI the awake group. The interval to appearance of first LH pulse was smaller (P<0.01) in groups of female goats in contact with SA bucks (33 ± 8.2 min) than in groups with SI ones (125 ± 12.5 min), independently if the males were sedated or awake. In conclusion, the sexually actives bucks, awake or sedated, stimulate the LH secretion, and the sexual behavior of males is indispensable to keep the LH pulsatility high on female goats exposed to male effect.
