This assay was performed to determine if the introduction of a male at the beginning of the luteal phase modifies the characteristics of the follicular wave in cyclical goats. So, during the sexual season, 17 multiparous females were synchronized with two doses of a prostaglandin analog at an interval of 7 days. A group of females (Control; n=9) had no contact with any male during the assay. In the other group (G3; n=8) the introduction of the male was done at the beginning of the luteal phase (day 3 of the estrous cycle). The ovarian activity was monitored daily during a complete estrous cycle through transrectal ultrasonography. The number of follicular waves in all the females was registered, as well as the size and the position of the follicles bigger than 3 mm. In the control group , 11,1% (1/9) of the females registered 3 follicular waves, 77. 8% (7/9) registered 4 waves and 11,1% (1/9) had 5 waves during an estrous cycle. In the G3 group, the 62,5% (5/8) registered 3 waves, and 37,5% (3/8) 4. The average duration of the follicular waves was longer in the females of the G3 than in the Control Group (P < 0,05). In the G3 group the follicles of wave 1 and 2 were bigger than those of the follicles 1 and 2 of the Control group (P < 0,05). It may be concluded that the introduction of the buck at the beginning of the luteal phase modifies the duration of the follicular waves, and the size of the follicles in the cyclical goats.
