Abstract

Cryopreservation of semen is important in goat reproduction because with this method, the goat sperm can be used after a long storage period. This technique also allows to extend the reproductive life of the stallion after it dies. Ejaculates from five Saanen bucks were collected through artificial vagina, and fresh and post thaw sperm quality was evaluated in two seasons: April (growing days) and December (decreasing days). The evaluated variables were: volume, concentration, viability, mass and progressive motility. A Tris base egg yolk diluent was used and the semen was diluted in a ratio of 1:4and packaged into 0.5 mL straws to an average concentration of 200 million motile sperm. The straws were frozen in liquid nitrogen vapor and thawed at 37 ° C for 15 sec. The results showed higher seminal quality in fresh samples (p<0.05) collected in December. On the other hand, there was not any significant difference (p>0.05) between seasons, in the post-thaw sperm quality.
