Thysanoptera (thrips) of protected area of Cuatro Cienegas, Coahuila, Mexico

Up to now, there has not been any research on insects in the protected areas of flora and fauna of Coahuila: Madera del Carmen and Cuatro Ciénegas Valley, including thrips, so details for this group of organisms that could be useful especially in aspects of biodiversity are unknown. The objectives of this study were to identify thrips species present in the Cuatro Ciénegas Valley, to identify potential new species, and to generate a key for the present genera. During 2007 and 2008, adults of Thysanoptera (thrips) were collected in the Cuatro Ciénegas Valley to identify the species in different ecological situations. Specimens were used for entomological net and direct collection of individuals in different parts of plants was also made. To identify the species, morphological keys were used, and further confirmation was done by recognized taxonomists of the group. Through the time of collection, four families, 20 genera and 61 species were obtained. Aspects of the new species obtained are detailed. The diversity of thrips in the Cuatro Ciénegas Valley, represents 55 % of the 111 species collected so far in the State of Coahuila. A key of the detected genera is presented.
