Abstract

The objective of the study was to evaluate the productive and reproductive performance of Charolais cows with different days to breeding of the restricted breeding period. The study used data from 745 annual cycles of production (calving-calving) from 256 Charolais cows from 3 to 12 years old. For the statistical analysis the data was grouped according to the days of breeding (G1< 22, G2= 22-42, G3= 43-63 y G4> 63 days). The data was analyzed with a fixed lineal effect model (year of calving/ days to breeding) with different number of repetitions. The days to breeding affected (P<0.05) the productive and reproductive characteristics. The cows with more days to breeding (G4) weaned calves heavier and were more efficient at weaning ((calf weaning weight / weight of the cow at the time of wean) x 100) that cows of the groups G1, G2 and G3. The cows G4 had fewer days to the next calving and less calving days, but greater calving interval (CI) than the cows from G1, G2 and G3. Nonetheless the productivity index of the cow (g of wean calve by day of CI) was better for the cows of G4 than from the other groups. Of the cows with fewer days to breeding (G1), only 50.6% wean calves in the next productive cycle. The proportion increased to 78.2, 87.7 and 92.7% for the groups G2, G3 and G4. It can be concluded that increasing the days to breeding of the nursing cows with the restricted seasons of breeding and calving, increased the interval between calving and upgrades the productive and reproductive characteristics.
