Reproductive response of anestrous goats by the male effect using males of high and low hierarchy

Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the reproductive response of anestrous female goats stimulated throughout the male affect us ing males of low and high social hierarchy. Fifty adult anovulatory female goats were divided on two groups. A group of females (n=27) was exposed to three males from low hierarchy. Another group of does (n=23) was exposed to three males of high hierarchy. Two groups of females remained in contact with the males during 18 days. The first and second male-induced ovulations were assessed by the presence and number of corpora lutea observed in each female by transrectal ultrasonography 6 and 18 days after introduction of the bucks.  Transrectal ultrasonography was performed using an Aloka SSD-500 machine connected to a 7.5 MHz linear probe. Fertility (number of fe males kidding/number of females exposed to males) and prolificacy (number of kids born/number of females giving birth) were determined at parturition. Ovulations were compared using Chi square. The proportions of females with ovulations and fertility were compared between groups using the Mann–Whitney U-test. The proportion of females that ovulated in the first male-induced ovulation did not dif fer significantly (p>0.05) between does stimulate with low (63.9%) or high hierarchy (78.3%). Similarly, in the second male-induced ovulation did not differ (p>0.05) between two groups (88.9% and 100% for does stimulate with low and high hierarchy males, respectively).  Fertility and prolificacy were not affected by the level of hierarchy of males (P<0.05). We conclude that hierarchy of males does not affect the reproductive response of anestrous goats when are stimulated by male effect.
