Abstract

The excessive use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture has led to soil degradation and water pollution. Furthermore, the problems caused by climate change reduce the ability to produce high-quality food capable of meeting the needs of the world’s population. In light of these challenges, sustainable fertilization alternatives for agriculture have been sought. In this regard, nanotechnology is a new tool with great potential to improve food production. The use of nanomaterials, such as nanofertilizers, promotes sustainable agriculture by delivering low concentrations that are unlikely to affect ecosystems. Due to their physicochemical properties resulting from their nanoscale size, they have the ability to improve nutrient use efficiency and enhance many biochemical and physiological processes, which will be reflected in crop yields. However, there are few studies on the potential negative long-term impact of nanofertilizer use on ecosystems, largely due to the lack of regulation or minimal regulation in this area. Therefore, the regulation of nanofertilizers and their proper use are necessary to ensure their sustainability and minimize environmental impact. The objective of this research was to analyze the importance of nanofertilizers in sustainable modern agriculture.
