Abstract

Fecal nitrogen (FN), body condition (BC), and body weight (BW) have been utilized as predictors of the nutritional status (NS) or diet quality (DQ) of grazing animals. However, the relationship between these variables is not clear enough; therefore, the purpose of this report was to evaluate the monthly variation of FN concentration, BC and BW as indicators of the NS of range beef cows. Also the simple linear correlations between FN with BC and BW were estimated for the same month and the following two months. The study was divided in two pha- ses: pre and postcalving. During the former only FN followed the trend shown by DQ, and BC and BW showed little variation; in this context it was observed that when FN was in the neighborhood of 1.12%, both BC and BW improved, but when FN was below 1.09 % the inverse was noted. At postweaning, FN,BC and BW were stadistically different (P<.01) over time, but FN was more able and inmediate to detect DQ changes; the critical value for FN was 1.32 % and both BC and BW improven or diminished above or below it.
