Abstract

A study was carried out with crossbred goats (Criollo x dairy breeds) kept under semiconfinement conditions in northeast Mexico, in order to evaluate the feeding value of sunflower silage for lactating does. Thirty goats were randomly divided into 6 groups. Goats received diets containing ascending levels of sunflower silage (0,25, 50,75 or 100 % plus a diet containing 100 % alfalfa hay). Goats grazed on range during 3 h daily. Neither average daily gain (from 4 to 97 g) nor milk yield (10.68 to 16.19 litres in 48 d) were affected by diets (P>0.05). It was concluded that sunflower silage can replace corn silage in diets offered to goats under restricted grazing on range.
