Celdas de combustible microbianas de plantas (PMFC) y estrategias MPPT para sistemas agrícolas autónomos

La agricultura moderna enfrenta importantes desafíos relacionados con la disponibilidad de agua, el uso eficiente de recursos y la necesidad de implementar sistemas de monitoreo capaces de operar de manera continua en campo. En este contexto, las celdas de combustible microbianas de plantas (PMFC, por sus siglas en inglés) han surgido como una alternativa innovadora para generar pequeñas cantidades de bioelectricidad aprovechando procesos naturales que ocurren entre las raíces de las plantas y los microorganismos presentes en el suelo. Este trabajo presenta de manera accesible el funcionamiento de las PMFC y su posible aplicación en agricultura inteligente, especialmente en sistemas de monitoreo ambiental, sensores agrícolas y plataformas autónomas de bajo consumo energético. Asimismo, se describen algunas estrategias utilizadas para mejorar el aprovechamiento de la energía generada, como los sistemas de seguimiento del punto de máxima potencia (MPPT, por sus siglas en inglés), así como el potencial de especies vegetales adaptadas a ambientes áridos, como el nopal, para aplicaciones bioenergéticas sostenibles. Finalmente, se discuten los principales retos tecnológicos y las perspectivas futuras de estas tecnologías dentro del desarrollo de sistemas agrícolas más eficientes, sostenibles y compatibles con las necesidades energéticas del campo.
