Abstract

Isolation and Characterization of Endophytic Bacteria Associated with Purple Top Symptoms in Potato. The potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a very important crop for mankind since, by its volume of production ranks fourth worldwide. It is severely attacked by the purple top disease (PTD), causing big economical losses and increasing production costs. It is considered that phytoplasmas are the main etiological agent of PTD. In a first attempt to isolate phytoplasmas using natural culture media, a lot of endophytic bacteria showed up, but there is not a known explanation of their nature. That´s why the aim of this work is to do a general survey of endophytic bacteria in potato plants with PMP, and inquire about their role in them. Through the isolation and recognition of bacteria some genera were identified including: Labrys, Shinella, and Ralstonia. Among the performed tests were included promotion of growth, pathogenicity tests, and antagonism of some phytopathogenic fungi. The obtained results showed that these bacteria do not produce a harmful effect on the potato plants, yet some of them promote its growth and are antagonistic to some plant pathogens. It may also happen that endophytic bacteria help keeping the plant alive even when PTD symptoms are present, due to their antagonistic capacity and growth-promoting effect, since although the bacteria have only one of these capacities, the plant is enhanced with the combined benefits of them all.
