Abstract

There is a growing demand for both fresh consumption and industrial processes of tomato. However, the yields of this crop in open-field and greenhouse in Mexico are very low. To increase the tomato production it is necessary, among other actions, to conduct evaluations of hybrids and varieties with regard to the general and specific combining ability. The objectives of this study were to estimate the general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) in seven lines of saladette tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and their crosses, to determine the important agronomic characteristics and estimate the effects of average, varietal and specific heterosis. F1 hybrids were produced in a greenhouse of the Universidad Autonoma Agraria Antonio Narro in the 2009 spring-summer crop cycle and were evaluated in an experimental plot of the same university in the 2010 spring summer agricultural cycle. The variables evaluated were: yield (Y), total number of fruits (TNF), fruit weight (FW), fruit length (FL), fruit diameter (FD) and days to first flower (DFF). A randomized complete block experimental design with four replications was used. Highly significant differences were found for GCA effects for all characters except that significant differences DIF and DF did not show statistical differences for any source of variation. For purposes of SCA there were not statistical differences for any source of variation. Hybrids IR24xIR8, IR17xIR13 and IR14xIR9 had high SCA effects for yield and consequently the highest yields, though they did not exceed that of their parents. The lines that showed the greatest effect of GCA and the highest performance in the comparison of means, could be used in a breeding program designed to exploit the additive gene action successfully.
